The National Library of Medicine classifies alternative medicine under the term complementary therapies. This is defined as therapeutic practices which are not currently considered an integral part of conventional allopathic medical practice.

Alternative medicine refers to therapeutic approaches taken in place of traditional medicine and used to treat or ameliorate disease. Integrative medicine refers to combining complementary treatments with conventional care.

Alternative Medicine includes unconventional, unorthodox, unproven, or alternative, complementary, innovative, integrative therapies. Therapies are termed as Complementary when used in addition to conventional treatments and as Alternative when used instead of conventional treatment. These therapies are sought out by individuals that have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, arthritis, cancer, back pain, and other medical conditions.

Although Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies vary widely, several themes can be traced through most of them:

The focus is on the whole person — physical, emotional, social, and spiritual.
Prevention of illness is a primary concern.
Treatments are highly individualized.
Treatments are aimed at the causes of illness rather than at its symptoms.
Treatments are designed to support the natural healing processes of the body.
Common alternative medicine includes Acupressure, Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Biochemic Medicines, Chinese ( Oriental ) Medicine, Electro-Homoeopathy, Chromotherapy/Colourtherapy, Dowsing, Feng Sui, Gem Therapy, Herbalism, Holistic Medicine, Hydrotherapy, Hypnotherapy, Magneto Therapy, Massage Therapy, Medical Astrology, Naturopathy, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Pyramid Healing, Reflexology, Vitamin Therapy, Yoga Therapy and Laughter Therapy.
